The River Spey Canoe Expedition is one of the UK’s ‘Classic Descents’ that all canoeists have on their must do list. This canoe exepedition is a true source to sea journey, launching high up in the Cairngorm Mountains by Newtonmore or as most groups choose to start on Loch Inch by Kincraig and follow the river to Spey Bay on the east coast of Scotland.

The River Spey is one of Scotland’s most scenic rivers and is famous for its salmon fishing as well as its contributions to the Scottish whisky industries. No matter if you start at Newtonmore, Kincraig or Aviemore, the improver paddler has plenty of opportunity to learn how to control the canoe before the river speeds up as you get closer to Grantown on Spey.
Be sure to plan enough time to enjoy your success journey by taking some time out at Spey Bay to spot the famous Moray Firth Dolphins, the local seals and visit the Whale & Dolphin Wildlife Centre.

All of Explore Highland’s canoe guides have paddled on the River Spey for over ten years and are well known and highly respected by other paddlers, anglers and local business through their support to the local economy. Where possible we try to use local fresh produce and stop off for regular leg stretches at key points along this trip including Kincraig, Boat of Garten and Aberlour.
