Sea Kayaking
Explore Highland run a wide range of sea kayak activities throughout the year. A taste of some of the activities on offer is shown in the tables below. To ensure both your safety and the quality of personal feedback throughout, we limit the group size for each instructor to a maximum of six paddlers (maximum of four paddlers in advanced conditions).

With some of Scotland’s most famous iconic landmarks as our back drop, sea kayaking courses with Explore Highland are always inspiring. Your outdoor classroom location will be chosen specifically to set a suitable tone for your course. This will help increase your ability and maximise your learning.

Introduction Sea Kayaking |
1 day |
A one day introduction to sea kayaking. Your day starts off learning about the sea kayak and working through some basic safety information and strokes on flat water. Once mastered in the afternoon you will take on a short journey develop your new skills and enjoy the wildlife and scenery. |
Intermediate Sea Kayaking |
2 days |
This course will help consolidate and apply your knowledge to allow you to be a smarter sea kayaker. Efficiently paddling a 15ft craft in the sea takes practise and skill. Using coastal features, small swells and tides we will make you skills sharper and a safer sea paddler. |
Advanced Sea Kayaking |
2 days |
For sea paddlers who want more from their kayak, we have this course for you. Practice drills in tidal streams, rock hopping, close quarter manoeuvring in rough waters, we will show you where the next level is! Please Note: This course is suitable for those who have a solid roll. |
Paddling in Tidal Streams |
1 day |
A tidal stream occurs where a large body of water pushes through a narrow gap causing fast moving water. Sea paddling in such an area is a skill that needs confidence and technique. During this day we will help you develop your knowledge and ability of tidal paddling whilst having fan in your kayak Please Note: This course is for intermediate paddlers with the ability to roll. |
BCU 3* Sea Training/Assessment |
2 days |
This is a discipline specific award. The three star paddler will be a competent performer in sheltered to moderate water environments and have the ability to paddle unsupervised, with similar standard paddlers on sheltered water (does not include BCU certificate fee). |
Other BCU Sea Kayaking performance training and assessments awards can be arranged on request. |

A half day or evening guided paddle into the Beauly and Moray Firth. Wildlife including bottlenose dolphins, seal and otters are all regular sights. Coaching given where appropriate. |

A half day or evening guided paddling through Loch Dochfour into world famous Loch Ness . Wildlife watching and beautiful landscapes and you may even be lucky enough to spot Nessie. |
Sea Kayak Day Trips |

Rolling is a finesse thing. It doesn't take a lot of strength as long as you have the technique right.
