Spey Descent - A Canoe Classic

spey descentThe Spey Descent is one of the UK's 'Classic Descents' that all canoeists have on their must do list. This descent is a true source to sea journey, launching high up in the Cairngorm Mountains by Newtonmore or as most groups choose to start by Kincraig and follow the river to Spey Bay.

The River Spey is one of Scotland's most scenic rivers and is famous for its salmon fishing as well as its local whisky industries. No matter where you start the novice paddlers have plenty of opportunity to learn how to control the canoe over the first few days before the river speeds up as you get closer to Grantown on Spey.

Be sure to plan enough time to enjoy your success journey by taking some time out at Spey Bay to spot the famous Moray Firth Dolphins, the local seals and visit the Whale & Dolphin Wildlife Centre.

Explore Highland offer a range of services for those taking on the Spey Descent, including competitively priced canoe or kayak hire for individuals and groups, a shuttle and support service for those taking to the river in their own boats, and for inexperienced paddlers or those who wish to go on a learning journey we offer guided trips throughout the season.

For bespoke trip, we can offer a range of accommodation options including wild camping, commercial camping, bunkhouse, B&B and local hotel options.
