Canal Splash (3 hours)

Fancy a wee evening paddling in the heart of the Highland Capital. Over Summer Explore Highland are offering the opportunity to have a canal splash on Wednesday & Friday evenings. Take to the lovely Caledonian Canal in Inverness and  practise, develop or learn new paddling skills or relax on the water with friends & family. Depending on the tide time and wind conditions, those with paddling experience and wanting a greater range can head out onto the Beauly Firth for even better views and possibly a sighting of a seals or dolphins.

We supply:

  • a choice of craft – touring kayak, open canoe, sit on kayak, sea kayak, or stand up paddle board (depending on availability)
  • a personal buoyancy aid (PFD) and a  suitable sized paddle
  • up to three hours of equipment hire
  • tea or coffee afterwards to warm up

What you need to bring: This greatly depends on the day. When paddling, its best to be prepared for the worst. Please bring suitable outdoor clothing to keep you warm for your time out on the water. We recommend bring along;

  • a waterproof jacket and trousers
  • a wetsuit may also be appropriate (available to hire for £3 per adult)
  • fleece jumper base layer
  • a hat or cap to keep head warm
  • old footwear/trainers that you don’t mind getting wet/splashed
  • complete change of clothes for afterwards
  • any medication you may require

Paddling Experience: No coaching/guiding is included with this hire so paddlers should be confident with hire craft and own self rescue skills

Age:  Parents are welcome to take children out onto the canal and/or Firth depending on craft & paddling experience/swim ability (minimum 5 year old)

Start Time: 6.00pm

Meet Location: Explore Highland Office, Clachnaharry Works Lock, Clachnaharry Road, Inverness, IV3 8RA!

Off the Water Finish Time: 9.00pm

Paddle Area: Muirtown Basin and Beauly Firth depending on high tide timings

Craft: Please email if you request a specific craft to be available. Tandem/solo open canoes, touring kayaks, sit on top solo or tandem kayaks, stand up paddle board or sea kayaks available depending on evening hire stock.

Personal Belongings: Camera’s, phones, car keys and other personal belongings are taken out onto the water at your own risk. If in doubt, please leave these back on land!
