SUP for Beginners

Sup board hire

This two-hour session is an introduction to stand up paddle boarding. Meeting at Explore Highland office, we issue a suitably sized wetsuit, wetsuit shoes, paddling jacket and paddle to everyone. Then the session begins.

The session will include;

  • Board & paddle features
  • Moving & handling
  • Launching & landing
  • Various paddling stances & positions
  • Safety & self-rescue skills

We supply:

  • a solo paddleboard
  • a wetsuit
  • a pair of wetsuit shoes
  • a personal buoyancy aid (PFD)if required
  • an adjustable sup paddle
  • approx two hours of SUP coaching including on and off the water
  • tea/coffee on arrival and debrief
  • copies of photos taken by your course are forwarded after

What you need to bring: When paddling, you should expect to be prepared for the outdoors and the Highland weather. The weather can be unpredictable so its best to be prepared for the worst so you enjoy. If you have your own paddling kit (wetsuit & wetsuit shoes/old trainers, please feel free to take those with you).

We recommend bring along;

  • a dry set of clothes
  • swimwear for under wetsuit
  • a towel
  • a cap/hat
  • any medication you may require

Group Size: Max 4 (Bookings close 24 hours before the activity date. Should there not be sufficient numbers, you will be notified and issued a full refund)

Age: This course is suitable for adults or accompanied teenagers (minimum 14-year-old)

Meeting Time: 3.00pm. Please arrive early to ensure time to park and change into wetsuit pre-course

Parking: Free parking available in the Scottish Canals car park. Please drive in towards Explore Highland office and park parallel to the stone wall.

Paddling Location: Muirtown Basin, from Clachnaharry Works Lock, Caledonian Canal

Finish Time: Approx 5.00pm

Distance: Approx. paddling distance N/A

Craft: Solo paddleboards are used as default on this trip.

Personal Belongings: Camera’s, phones, car keys, and other personal belongings are taken out onto the water at your own risk. If in doubt, please leave these items in your own car when out on the water
